The fact that we are alive has only one conclusion that is -our death.

Holy Quran Sura Al-I’Imran (3:185) Every soul shall taste death. You shall receive your full reward for everything which you have striven for, on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever is spared from the fire and is admitted into paradise will have attained the objective of this worldly life; for the life of this world is nothing but an illusory enjoyment.

Holy Quran Sura Anbiya (21:35) Every soul is bound to have the taste of death. We are putting all of you to a test by passing you through bad and good conditions, and finally you shall return to Us.

Death is known as a killer of all enjoyments of this world. We often want to indulge in all types of enjoyments of this world even if many of the enjoyments have been clearly declared as forbidden/harram. We deceive ourselves by forgetting our death and pretending as if we are on this earth forever. Leave alone being on this earth forever for enjoyment, our limbs/senses/body give-up as we grow old and old-helpless body does not allow for enjoyments. So for the enjoyment of brief span of our youth/life we are throwing away the eternity. Bad choice indeed.

We look at kuffar’s outwardly enjoyments of this life and want same for us, while even as we have been told that this life is prison for believers.

Sahih Muslim (Book 042, Number 7058) Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: The world is a prison-house for a believer and Paradise for a non-believer.

Al-Tirmidhi (Hadith 5249 Narrated by Abdullah ibn Amr) Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “The world is the believer’s prison and famine, but when he leaves the world he leaves the prison and the famine.” It is transmitted in Sharh as-Sunnah.

This worldy life is nothing more than a test and we have to make choices here. Either we choose the enjoyments of the brief span (the youth i.e. till we become old) of this brief life or we choose the eternal enjoyments of the eternal life after death. The kufaar have made their choice of the enjoyments of this life at the expense of hereafter. And our choice is with us. What is at stake is not only the eternal paradise but also saving ones-self from hell.

Holy Quran (20:131) Do not strain your eyes with envy regarding the worldly benefits We have bestowed on some among them, for with these We seek to test them, the lawful provision of your Rabb is better and more lasting.

Holy Quran (76: 2) Indeed, We have created man from the sperm drop containing both sexes, so that We may test him. Therefore, We gave him the faculties of hearing and sight.

Holy Quran (67: 2) The One Who created death and life, so that He may put you to test, to find out which of you is best in deeds: He is the All-Mighty, the All-Forgiving.

The choice is easy but sticking to it needs patience and perseverance till one becomes old enough not to indulge in it or till ones death, as the test is not easy one.

Holy Quran (18:7) We have decked the earth with all kinds of ornaments to test the people and to see which of them do the best deeds.

Sunan Abu-Dawud (Book 40, Number 4726) Narrated AbuHurayrah: The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) said: ……….When Allah created Hell, He said: Go and look at it, Gabriel. He went and looked at it, then came and said: O my Lord! By Thy might, no one who hears of it, will enter it. He then surrounded it with desirable things and said: Go and look at it, Gabriel. He went, looked at it, then came and said: O my Lord! By Thy might and power, I am afraid that no one will remain who does not enter it.

Sahih Muslim (Book 040, Number 6778) Anas b. Malik reported: The Paradise is surrounded by hardships and the Hell-Fire is surrounded by temptations.

Among the temptations of this world that we have been strongly forbidden to indulge in are Zina (fornication/adultery) and khamr (alcohol/wine). These are among the major sins. Zina and Wine are immoral sins and leads to more immorality, which eventually leads to decline of the society on the whole. That is the reason why our enemy wants these two to spread and become common in Muslim societies.

We have been told that if we avoid major sins and immorality (including Zina & Wine) then our minor sins won’t determine our destiny.

Holy Quran Sura An-Najm (53: 32) To those who avoid the major sins and shameful deeds and are guilty of only small offence, surely for them your Rabb will have abundant forgiveness. He knew you well when He created you from earth and when you were just embryos in your mother’s wombs, therefore, do not claim piety for yourselves. He knows best who is really God-fearing pious.

Zina (Adultery/Fornication)

Fornication is a Zina committed by unmarried person. Adultery is Zina done by married person which makes adultery even more serious sin.

How major and serious sin Zina is can be seen from the punishment of the sin in here and hereafter.

Holy Quran Sura al-Noor (24:2) The fornicatress and the fornicator, flog each of them with a hundred stripes. Let not pity withhold you in their case, in a punishment prescribed by Allaah, if you believe in Allaah and the Last Day. And let a party of the believers witness their punishment

Sahih Bukhari (Volume 2, Book 23, Number 413) Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar : The Jew brought to the Prophet a man and a woman from amongst them who have committed (adultery) illegal sexual intercourse. He ordered both of them to be stoned (to death), near the place of offering the funeral prayers beside the mosque.”

Sahih Muslim (Book 017, Number 4191) Ubada b. as-Samit reported: Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Receive (teaching) from me, receive (teaching) from me. Allah has ordained a way for those (women). When an unmarried male commits adultery with an unmarried female (they should receive) one hundred lashes and banishment for one year. And in case of married male committing adultery with a married female, they shall receive one hundred lashes and be stoned to death.

From above it is clear that if un-married person does fornication then his/her punishment is One Hundred lashes and banishment for a year. And if married person commits adultery then the punishment is stoning to death. How grave a SIN and how grave the PUNISHMENT in this life. The punishment of these deeds if not repented in hereafter is incomparable to worldly punishment.

Holy Quran Sura al Furqan (25:68,69) “……..nor commit fornication – he that does this shall be punished for his sin, and his punishment shall be doubled on the Day of Resurrection…….”

Sahih Bukhari (Book 87, Number 171) Narrated Samura bin Jundub: ……………………… The Prophet added, “We looked into it and found naked men and women, and behold, a flame of fire was reaching to them from underneath, and when it reached them, they cried loudly. I asked them, ‘Who are these?…………………… They replied, ‘We will inform you: …………………… those naked men and women whom you saw in a construction resembling an oven, they are the adulterers and the adulteresses……………

How major/grave a sin zina is can be see from below ayat of Quran

Holy Quran Sura al Furqan (25:68,69) “……Those who invoke not, with Allah, any other god, nor slay such life as Allah has made sacred, except for just cause, not commit fornication and any that does this (not only) meets punishment (But) the Penalty on the Day of Judgment will be doubled to him, and he will dwell therein in ignominy……”

In above ayah the sin of zina is mentioned just after the murder. Still we do not ponder over this sin and nor we cut all the ways that leads to this sin.

Zina is such a horrible sin, we have been told to cut all the means/ways that can lead to it.

Holy Quran Sura al-Isra (17:32) “Nor come nigh to adultery: for it is a shameful (deed) and an evil, opening the road (to other evils).”

Reported by al-Tabaraani (see also Saheeh al-Jaami, 5045) “Rasulullah (peace and blessings be upon him) explained: “If one of you were to be stabbed in the head with a piece of iron it would be better for him than if he were to touch a woman whom it is not permissible for him to touch”.

Al-Tirmidhi (3118) Narrated Umar ibn al-Khattab, Rasulullah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whenever a man is alone with a woman the Devil makes a third.” (Tirmidhi transmitted it as authentic)

Holy Quran Sura An Nur (24:30) Enjoin the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that is chaster for them. Surely Allah is well aware of their actions. (24:31) Likewise enjoin the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their modesty; not to display their beauty and ornaments except what normally appears thereof; let them draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their charms except to their……

Musnad Ahmad Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman narrated that the Messenger of Allah said: “The glance at the woman is a poisonous arrow from the arrows of the Devil. Whoever leaves it out of the fear of Allah, then Allah will reward him with faith whose sweetness he will taste in his heart.” [Reported by Ahmad in his ‘Musnad,’ and it is authentic]

The above considerations had lead to development of Islamic culture where-in men and women do not mix-up and talk to each-other in friendly manner like at gatherings, parties, festivals, educational institutions, etc. But as Islam is slipping from our lives so is this culture of separation which had saved our society from this despicable sin till now.

But now we feel no shame in befriending people from opposite gender. This culture of shamelessness will only lead to zina in society like it did in western societies which are in rot today.

Baihaqi Abdullah ibn Umar (ra) narrated that the Prophet (saw) said: “Indeed haya (modesty) and Iman are Companions. When one of them is lifted, the other leaves as well.”

Allah has blessed human beings with a number of abilities
and potentials. One of these potential is reproductive power .The purpose of this power was to maintain human societies on this globe and to develop families based on the love affection and mercy. But this ability is abused by some human beings to seek pleasure in an unacceptable way i.e. zina rather in a halal way which is marriage.

Holy Quran Sura Ar-Rum (30:21) And among His Signs is this, that He created for you wives from among yourselves, that you may find repose in them, and He has put between you affection and mercy. Verily, in that are indeed signs for a people who reflect.

Sahih Bukhari (Book 31, Number 129) Narrated ‘Alqama: While I was walking with ‘Abdullah he said, “We were in the company of the Prophet and he said, ‘He who can afford to marry should marry, because it will help him refrain from looking at other women, and save his private parts from committing illegal sexual relation; and he who cannot afford to marry is advised to fast, as fasting will diminish his sexual power.”

Islam has recommended immediate marriages after puberty and allowed polygamy to keep human beings in discipline but there is no room for moral corruption of any kind and it has always condemned extra-marital and pre-marital relationships.

The illicit pleasure of zina does not last long but the sin remains beyond the pleasure. And eventually when death catches up with the zani, the zina will land him/her in hell; what a price paid for pleasure of few moments.

Wine/Alcohol

Wine is known as mother of all evils. Having wine or any other intoxicant is one of the major sins and crime in Islam and is totally forbidden for us.

Sunan Abu-Dawud (Book 26, Number 3672) Narrated Abdullah Ibn Abbas: The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) said: Every intoxicant is khamr (wine) and every intoxicant is forbidden. If anyone drinks wine, Allah will not accept prayer from him for forty days, but if he repents, Allah will accept his repentance. If he repeats it a fourth time, it is binding on Allah that He will give him tinat al−khabal to drink. He was asked: What is tinat al−khabal, Apostle of Allah? He replied: Discharge of wounds, flowing from the inhabitants of Hell. If anyone serves it to a minor who does not distinguish between the lawful and the unlawful, it is binding on Allah that He will give him to drink the discharge of wounds, flowing from the inhabitants of Hell.

The serious consequences of having wine is clear from above and following hadiths

Sahih Muslim (Book 017, Number 4226) Anas b. Malik reported that a person who had drink wine was brought to Allah’s Apostle (may peace be upon him). He gave him forty stripes with two lashes. Abu Bakr also did that, but when Umar (assumed the responsibilities) of the Caliphate, he consulted people and Abd al-Rahman said: The mildest punishment (for drinking) is eighty (stripes) and ‘Umar their prescribed this punishment.

Sunan Abu-Dawud (Book 26, Number 3675) Narrated Daylam al−Himyari: I asked the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) and said: Apostle of Allah! we live in a cold land in which we do heavy work and we make a liquor from wheat to get strength from if for our work and to stand the cold of our country. He asked: Is it intoxicating? I replied: Yes. He said: You must avoid it. I said: The people will not abandon it. He said: If they do not abandon it, fight with them.

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith (Hadith 3655) Narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “There are three people to whom Allah has forbidden Paradise: one who is addicted to wine, an undutiful son, and a cuckold who agrees to his womenfolk’s adultery.” Ahmad and Nasa’i transmitted it.

From above it is clear that in this world the punishment of drinking wine is 80 lashes. And in hereafter, wine drinker will be given pus from wounds of inhabitants of hell to drink. Hope the wine drinkers will find the pus as enjoyable as the wine they drank (pun intended).

Even further failure & loss of drinking the wine of this world is that a person who drinks wine here won’t be given the wine of paradise.

Al-Tirmidhi (Hadith 5650) Narrated by Hakim ibn Mu’awiyah Allah’s Messenger said, “In Paradise there are a great river of water, a great rivers of honey, a great river of milk and a great river of wine; then the smaller river will be divided off.” Tirmidhi transmitted it, and Darimi transmitted it from Mu’awiyah.

Sahih Muslim (Book 023, Number 4967) Ibn ‘Umar reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: He who drank (wine) in this world would be deprived of it in the Hereafter.

Sahih Muslim (Book 023, Number 4969) Ibn ‘Umar reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: He who drank wine in this world will not be provided with pure drink in the Hereafter, except in case he repents.

The taste of wine of this world and that of Jannah can’t be compared and the one who drinks of this world won’t get to taste that of Jannah; what a loss.

Sunan Abu-Dawud (Book 26, Number 3666) Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar: The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: Allah has cursed wine, its drinker, its server, its seller, its buyer, its presser, the one for whom it is pressed, the one who conveys it, and the one to whom it is conveyed.

Sunan Abu-Dawud (Book 23, Number 3482) Narrated Al−Mughirah ibn Shu’bah: The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: He who sold wine should shear the flesh of swine.
From above it is clear that not only is drinking wine haraam but also everyone connected to it like seller, buyer, server, etc. this logically includes a person who is offering his property for the wine drinking.

Many try to deceive others and themselves by calling a drink with some other name so as to justify its drinking. Like they have a drink which is not 100% wine but has certain percentage of it and then they name the drink something other than wine to justify their drinking. But about this also we were forewarned.

Sunan Abu-Dawud (Book 26, Number 3680) Narrated AbdurRahman ibn Ghanam: Malik ibn AbuMaryam said: AbdurRahman ibn Ghanam entered upon us and we discussed tila’ and he said: AbuMalik al−Ash’ari told me that he heard the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) say: Some of my people will assuredly drink wine calling it by another name
Sunan Abu-Dawud (Book 26, Number 3673) Narrated Jabir ibn Abdullah: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If a large amount of anything causes intoxication, a small amount of it is prohibited.

Leave alone social drinking we have not been allowed to even sit on a table where wine is served.

Al-Tirmidhi (Hadith 4477) Narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “…………And he who believes in Allah and the last day must not sit at a cloth where wine is being circulated.” Tirmidhi and Nasa’i transmitted it.

Those who have wine should think over the consequences of this mean action and he/she should remember that if he dies in same condition then he/she will meet their lord Allah as if he/she was a idolator i.e. mushrik –inna-lillahi-wa-inna-ilahi-rajeoon.

Al-Tirmidhi (Hadith 3657) Narrated by Abdullah ibn Abbas ; AbuHurayrah Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “If one who is addicted to wine dies he will meet Allah Most High in the same condition as an idolater.”

Leaving the addiction requires will and that resolve can easily be obtained by considering above mentioned facts and by remembering that death will put an end to his/her addiction anyway and if he/she leaves drinking wine then Allah will have him/her drink from holy tanks.

Al-Tirmidhi (Hadith 3654) Narrated by AbuUmamah The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Allah has sent me as a mercy to the universe and as a guidance to the universe, and my Lord, Who is Great and Glorious, has commanded me to annihilate stringed instruments, wind instruments, idols, crosses and pre-Islamic customs. My Lord, Who is Great and Glorious has sworn, ‘By My might, none of My servants will drink a mouthful of wine without My giving him a similar amount of pus to drink, but he will not abandon it through fear of Me without My giving him drink from the holy tanks.'” Ahmad transmitted it.

Zina and Alcohol are grave sins. Indulging in it leads one away from iman and makes one indulge in other types of sins as well. While a person is committing these sins then iman leaves him/her during the time sin is being committed and it gets back only when he/she is done with the action.

Sahih Bukhari (Book 43, Number 655) Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, “When an adulterer commits illegal sexual intercourse, then he is not a believer at the time, he is doing it, and when a drinker of an alcoholic liquor drinks it, then he is not a believer at the time of drinking it, and when a thief steals, then he is not a believer at the time of stealing, and when a robber robs, and the people look at him, then
he is not a believer at the time of doing robbery.

Even more ignorance upon ignorance is for the person who indulges in these sins publicly or after sinning publicizes his/her sin, by doing so he/she further closes the door of mercy.

Sahih Bukhari (Vol 8, Book 73, Number 95) Narrated Abu Huraira: I heard Allah’s Apostle saying. “All the sins of my followers will be forgiven except those of the Mujahirin (those who commit a sin openly or disclose their sins to the people). An example of such disclosure is that a person commits a sin at night and though Allah screens it from the public, then he comes in the morning, and says, ‘O so-and-so, I did such-and-such (evil) deed yesterday,’ though he spent his night screened by his Lord (none knowing about his sin) and in the morning he removes Allah’s screen from himself.”

Now what about a person with whom satan has been successful in making him/her do these sins but now he/she is regretful. Repentance is the only way out.

Holy Quran Sura Az-Zumar (39:53) Do not despair, for Allah the Most Exalted and Glorified said in the Quran “Say, “O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah . Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.”

Holy Quran Sura Ale Imraan (3:135-136) Allah likes such good people very much, who, if ever they commit a base deed or wrong their own soul by the commission of a sin, remember Allah instantly, and ask for forgiveness from Him for their shortcomings. For who, but Allah, can forgive sins? (And Allah loves those) who do not knowingly persist in the wrongs they did. These will be rewarded with forgiveness from Allah, and with Gardens beneath which canals flow, and they will reside therein forever! How excellent is the reward of those who do good deeds!

Sahih Bukhari (Vol 2, Book 23, Number 329) Narrated Abu Dhar: Allah’s Apostle said, “Someone came to me from my Lord and gave me the news (or good tidings) that if any of my followers dies worshiping none (in any way) along with Allah, he will enter Paradise.” I asked, “Even if he committed illegal sexual intercourse (adultery) and theft?” He replied, “Even if he committed illegal sexual intercourse (adultery) and theft.”

The one who has repented from these sins should think over how he got involved in those sins. He should get himself in company of good friends rather than ones who act as agents of satan.

Sunan Abu-Dawud (Book 41, Number 4815) Narrated Abu Hurayrah: The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: A man follows the religion of his friend; so each one should consider whom he makes his friend.
